United Way Women’s Initiative

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania Women’s Initiative is an influential leadership network of women committed to philanthropy and volunteerism towards the positive development of character in girls - through impact, education and fundraising embodied in their Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program.

Girls Today,
Leaders Tomorrow

United Way’s Women’s Initiative is devoted to supporting adolescent girls (grades 6 and 7) through public education, advocacy, volunteer mobilization, and funding to help them develop core values that will protect them from negative influences and support their success as adults. Through our Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow efforts, UnitedWay supports community and school-based activities that focus on helping girls build self-esteem, honor their bodies and maintain healthy relationships with their peers. The Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program supports attitudes and behaviors related to the “six pillars of character” – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

United Way Women’s Initiative GTLT Gala
a Rousing Success

Laurada Byers, Chair of the Byerschool Foundation and recipient of the 2010 Women Caring About What Matters Award

Laurada Byers, Chair of the Byerschool Foundation, received the 2010 Women Caring About What Matters Award for her inspirational dedication to children in our community.

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Women’s Initiative hosted their seventh annual Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow fund raising gala on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Wanamaker Building’s Crystal Tea Room. This exciting event played host to nearly 700 of the Philadelphia area’s most successful and philanthropic women and men who are taking an active role in the community by giving, advocating and volunteering to support young girls through the United Way Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program.

The United Way Women’s Initiative is devoted to supporting adolescent girls (grades 6 through 8) through public education, advocacy, volunteer mobilization and funding to help them develop core values that will protect them from negative influences and support their success as adults. Through Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow, United Way supports community and school-based activities that focus on the future success of adolescent girls – building their self-esteem, helping them maintain healthy relationships with their peers and developing their leadership skills.

Charitable contributions for the gala totaled nearly $340,000 with donations continuing to be accepted until the end of May. United Way’s Women’s Initiative has raised over $2 million to advance the common good in just over seven years. Key to their success is presenting sponsor and partner in caring, Independence Blue Cross.

During the evening’s inspiring event, Laurada Byers, Chair of the Byerschool Foundation, was presented with the 2010 “Women Caring About What Matters Award” for her inspirational dedication to children in our community. As part of the award, Mrs. Byers was given the opportunity to donate $10,000 from the evening’s proceeds to the charitable agency of her choice. Laurada will be donating the honorarium to the Byerschool Foundation.

Also present at the gala were the participants in the United Way Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program. The girls were selected by the United Way’s Women’s Initiative from a variety of neighborhoods, backgrounds and skill levels to take part in the program. Since the initial leadership retreat weekend, the girls have met once a month to participate in projects that focus on team-building, health and wellness, positive self-image, etiquette, public speaking, diversity and relationships.
